VCSG Zero Trust SecDevOps Team

The federal government and Department of Defense (DoD) are actively implementing Zero Trust Architecture to enhance cybersecurity. Following a 2021 Executive Order, federal agencies must adopt Zero Trust by the end of 2023, with significant progress reported.

The DoD aims to achieve specific Zero Trust capabilities by 2027, focusing on a culture of security, technology acceleration, and adaptive strategies. While not mandated, many state and local governments are also pursuing Zero Trust initiatives to bolster their cybersecurity frameworks.

"Moving the U.S. Government Toward Zero Trust Cybersecurity Principles" - OMB Memorandum M-22-09.

The memorandum from the Office of Management and Budget outlines a strategy for U.S. Federal agencies to transition to a Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) by the end of Fiscal Year 2024. This approach emphasizes continuous verification of users and devices, rather than relying on traditional perimeter security.

Key components include implementing strong identity management systems, multi-factor authentication, and encryption for all network traffic. Agencies are required to develop detailed implementation plans and collaborate with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to enhance security measures against evolving cyber threats, ensuring robust defenses for critical infrastructure and sensitive data.
